THIS IS TEXAS, WHERE EVERYTHING IS BIGGER. We all want to stand tall and satisfy the opportunities around us. Can you deliver big when it counts? Now is your chance.
Welcome to SC15 in Austin and the first ever (and probably last)
Beowulf Bash Mechanical Bull Riding Contest
(and Other Cowperson Stuff).
(We are in Texas… What else did you think we were talking about?)
After last year’s New Orleans parade, the BeoBash What-Next committee decided more audience participation was in order. While those of us in the parade had fun flinging Mardi Gras beads at drunk people with reckless abandon, we yearned for a safe and wholesome activity that would throw this year’s guests around like Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls.
As usual, we start at 9pm on Monday (Nov. 16) after the SC15 Opening Gala. There will be two mechanical bulls and a leaderboard will keep track of who can stay up the longest (on the mechanical bull).
Everyone who rides the bull will get an “I Stayed Up All Night at the 2015 Beowulf Bash” T-shirt to wear during SC. For those not up for the full Urban Cowboy1 experience, there will be other fun activities, such as a taking-the-bull-by-the-horns strong-man contest and mechanical calf-roping. (We are not making this up.)
1 Urban Cowboy was a 1980 film about Texas, drinking, fighting, two guys, and a girl, which is what most movies and Country & Western songs are about. Anyway, there was this mechanical bull in the movie that became popular in the kind of bars throughout the country where two guys and a girl would go to drink and fight. The machines were subsequently replaced by Jell-O wrestling and dwarf throwing (now illegal).

5 MECHANICAL BULL RIDING FACTS:
- You will not get off the mechanical bull the way you got on.
- Riding the mechanical bull is exactly like the real thing except you don’t land in manure and dirt, get trampled, kicked, or gored.
- You do not need to drive a pickup truck to ride the bull, but it does help with your street cred.
- Be aware you may loose the following things while riding: hats, jewelry, glasses, lunch.
- Bud (John Travolta) and Sissy (Debra Winger) went on to open the first Sleep Number® bed franchise in Texas.
HOW TO PRACTICE:
Place cushions on the floor around you. Fall down hard. Repeat. And remember, grip is important.
Cut out this badge and wear it during the show. No one will get in your way when asking for free stuff.
